Chicago's mayor, police superintendent and commissioner of the Department of Family and Support Services weigh in on what they think is necessary to curb the violence afflicting the city's neighborhoods. In addition to strategic policing and stiffer penalities for lawbreakers, they emphasized the value of keeping kids away from crime in the first place. "By working with groups such as the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and its community partners," they said, "neighborhoods that are impaced by violence can renew their trust in us, and that starts with youth programs and continues with community development."
