Looking for a Few Good Women and Men

Published: August 22, 2016

Calling all aspiring community development professionals!

If you have a passion for working in your neighborhood, enjoy helping people overcome barriers to meaningful employment, and are eager to connect with similar people across the city, LISC AmeriCorps might be the perfect opportunity for you.

Over the last 15 years, LISC Chicago, in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), has supported over 250 AmeriCorps members who have completed service terms of three months to two years. LISC Chicago typically recruits 10 or more of these AmeriCorps members, places them with neighborhood organizations around Chicago, and supports their professional development through monthly meetings, networking opportunities, and a leadership conference.

In 2016-17, LISC is recruiting 10 AmeriCorps members to serve 10 months starting in October and ending in July 2017. All AmeriCorps members will be working as Digital Literacy Instructors at LISC’s Financial Opportunity Centers (FOCs), where clients can access career development, bridge and vocational programs, financial coaching, digital skills training, and income supports.

AmeriCorps Digital Literacy Instructors work with clients to learn computer skills and increase their confidence so they are well-prepared for jobs that require these skills. Each FOC offers a schedule of classes ranging from typing and computer basics to intermediate use of Microsoft Office programs. The computer labs are open for unstructured work and one-on-one support as well.

Members receive a living stipend and an education award of up to $5,775 upon successful completion of their service. Often, graduating members are offered full-time employment with community partners.
