FOC/CWF Video Feature - Chicago Commons

Published: June 1, 2015

Like many of his neighbors on the West Side of Chicago, Alfred Stephens had difficulty finding work during the Great Recession.

Frustrated with a job search that yielded few results and needing to support his family, Stephens turned to the Chicago Commons Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) – a member of the LISC Chicago network of FOCs/Center for Working Families (CWFs).

There, he received the comprehensive financial coaching, benefits screening and employment assistance services that helped get him back on his feet. Unlike other job programs that treated him like a number, Chicago Commons offered services specifically tailored to his skills, needs and goals. “They didn’t treat me like an outsider,” said Stephens. “They treated me like family.”

Over the course of its history, Chicago Commons has assisted more than 400 residents of the West Humboldt Park community. In its emphasis on holistic financial wellness, the organization strives to help people like Stephens plan sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

“Because of the help I received from (Chicago Commons), I feel good about myself,” he noted. “I actually have a career – not a 9-to-5, a career.”
